Our Handwriting Journey

At Ovingham CE First School, we use Letter Join to deliver high quality handwriting lessons.

In Reception, children learn to form written letters that correspond to sounds. They use a pre-cursive style which prepares them for joining up letters when they are ready. Pre-cursive letters start on the line and are printed separately when forming a word.

Here are some examples of beautiful handwriting from our Reception children this year.

In Year 1 children continue to perfect their pre-cursive letter formation. When letters are formed correctly, some children begin to join up their handwriting.

In Year Two we aim for all children to use joined up handwriting by the end of they year and this is practised this in discreet handwriting lessons. A cursive style is modelled by teachers and handwriting is an important part of all lessons across the curriculum. Intervention groups are delivered to support children who need a little extra support in perfecting letter formation before taking this step.

In Year Three and Year Four we begin to see children develop their own handwriting style.
