Physical Education

The Intent of our PE Curriculum

At Ovingham, we aim to provide a comprehensive P.E. curriculum which enables pupils to reach their full sporting potential.  We offer a wide range of high-quality curriculum and extra-curricular sport and work with local sports clubs to identify talent and ensure pupils get further opportunities to develop outside of school.  Our P.E. curriculum also incorporates work on keeping healthy, positive attitudes and links closely to our work around PSCHE, RSE and British Values.

How we Implement our Curriculum

All pupils in key stage 1 and 2 receive 2 hours of curriculum P.E. each week.  Pupils in Year 3 and 4 attend one hour of swimming each week for 10 weeks. Pupils are taught water survival skills in addition to learning to swim.  P.E. is carefully planned to ensure that pupils learn a range of skills, work safely and get the opportunity to use a range of different equipment.  We use a range of external sports instructors to deliver dance, gymnastics, cricket and other sports in school.  We also offer a range of extra-curricular clubs throughout the year including multi-skills, gymnastics, dance and football, all of which are well attended.  Clubs are led by school staff and outside sports coaches.  Pupils also receive additional opportunities such as taking part in inter and intra school competitions, Change 4 Life Clubs and supporting sporting charitable events such as Sport Relief.

The Impact of our Curriculum

Progress in P.E. is monitored termly to ensure all pupils meet their full potential. Pupils at Ovingham get a great deal of enjoyment out of our P.E. provision both during lessons and through our extra-curricular provision. Children engage enthusiastically with experiences provided for them and this results in a good level of progress throughout the year groups.
