Playground Buddies

At Ovingham C of E First School, our playground buddies play a key role in creating a safe, friendly, happy and peaceful environment for children during break and lunchtimes.

Who Are They?

All children in Year 4 are given the opportunity to apply for a buddy position. This is something they look forward to throughout their time at first school; it gives them the opportunity to take on some responsibility as the oldest children in school.  The buddies take their responsibilities very seriously, helping to make the playground a happy place for the younger children and also offer a great help to the staff on duty at lunchtime.

What is their role?

Buddies help children to learn how to play cooperatively with each other. This is particularly important for our youngest children when they first join us. They help children resolve minor conflicts and teach them how to play a wider range of games in a fair way. They monitor the 'Buddy Bus Stop' and help lonely children to make more friends.

How do we spot them?

Our Buddies wear bright red vests and caps and they can be found on both yards an monitoring the hall doors.
